How To Care For Your Golf Cart Over The Winter

Nov. 16 2021 Carts and Accessories By Cart Barn

The temperatures are slowly getting a little chillier, the leaves are falling to the ground, and the winter season is on the horizon. As bummed as you are that this year’s warm weather season has officially come to a close, it’s about to get really festive … everywhere you go.

The golf season has come to an end, the summer lakehouse you’ve enjoyed all season is time to lock up, and it’s time to put that golf cart away. As you store your golf cart away this winter, keep in mind how important it is to properly care for (and prepare your cart for) the cold weather season.

Here are some winter storage and maintenance tips and tricks to keep your cart in pristine condition while you’re away for the winter.

Clean Up Your Cart Before You Store It Away

Golf cart have a little dust and dirt from all the use you got out of it this year? Right on, sounds like you had quite the fun summer! But now it’s time to get that dirt off and that cart clean so nothing that can cause long term damage will be sitting on your cart all winter long.

Use soap, water, and a degreaser, if necessary, to wipe away all dirt, mud, grime, and grease from outside and inside of your golf cart.

Park The Golf Cart In A Proper Position

Key switch OFF and cart in NEUTRAL. It might seem obvious but you’d be surprised how many owners forget to properly position their carts before heading away for the season. Ensuring your cart is left in the correct position long term is a priority for ensuring the longevity of your cart.

Make Sure The Storage Area Is Going To Keep Your Cart Safe

You’ll want to be sure that your golf cart is positioned in a place where it can’t move and that’s safe. Position blocks behind each of the tires. You should also engage the parking brake which relieves pressure on your cart brakes as it sits for the season and ensures it won’t move.

Prepare The Battery

Preparing your golf cart battery for storage is one of the most important things to do for the winter season. Give it a good deep clean to reduce corrosion. Then you’re going to want to fully charge the battery as a fully charged battery will not freeze and you want to avoid a battery ever going completely dead. A stored golf cart battery needs to be checked consistently throughout the winter to ensure it stays in good condition and fully charged.

Drain The Fuel

If you drive a gas-powered golf cart, you will want to drain the fuel from the tank completely. Gas left in a fuel tank can solidify and cause issues when you go to refuel it come the spring season. You’ll also want to either disconnect the fuel line from the tank or use the shut-off valve.

Check The Tires

Before heading out for the winter season, check all four tires on your golf cart. Inflate or deflate them all to the correct pressure indicated on the tires. Tires that sit for long periods of time with the incorrect pressure can cause the tires to lose their correct shape.

Use A Cover

Opting for a golf cart cover when the cart is in storage is always a good idea. Protective covers are a sure way to keep any dust or dirt from building up on cart while it’s in storage. Coming back in spring to a clean and pristine cart is always a great feeling!
